In the Witcher 3's "Ashen Marriage" quest, set in Novigrad, Geralt assists Triss Merigold and her fiancé, Castello, in their preparations for a whirlwind wedding. His tasks range from monster extermination in the city canals to procuring alcohol and selecting a wedding gift for Triss.
The gift Geralt chooses significantly impacts Triss's response. A memory rose, a callback to The Witcher 2, evokes a powerful emotional reaction, while less sentimental gifts receive a cooler reception.
However, Dijkstra's revelation that Castello is connected to witch hunters throws a wrench into the proceedings. Castello, it transpires, is being blackmailed – the hunters threaten to expose his daughter from a previous marriage.
Geralt can choose to reveal this truth to Triss, either alone or with Castello. Regardless, the wedding is called off. Triss's reaction varies depending on the method of revelation, ranging from disappointment to gratitude for Castello's honesty, but ultimately deeming the marriage too rushed.
This plot development offered a chance to deepen Geralt and Triss's relationship while further developing supporting characters.
