Wii Guitar Hero Controller Returns in 2025: Hyperkin's Hyper Strummer

A new Guitar Hero controller for the Wii, the Hyper Strummer, is hitting Amazon on January 8th for $76.99. This unexpected release likely targets retro gaming enthusiasts seeking a nostalgic experience and those revisiting Guitar Hero and Rock Band titles. The controller offers a fresh opportunity to reignite the passion for these classic rhythm games.

The announcement of a new Wii Guitar Hero controller in 2025 is surprising, given both the Wii console and the Guitar Hero franchise are no longer actively supported. The Wii, while a massive success for Nintendo following the GameCube, ceased production in 2013. The last mainline Guitar Hero game was 2015's Guitar Hero Live, with the final Wii installment being 2010's Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock.

Hyperkin's Hyper Strummer is designed for Wii versions of Guitar Hero and select Rock Band games – Rock Band 2, 3, The Beatles, Green Day, and Lego Rock Band are compatible; the original Rock Band is not. An updated iteration of a previous Hyperkin controller, the Hyper Strummer uses a Wii Remote inserted into the back.

Why a New Wii Guitar Hero Controller Now?

The target audience for this controller is a key question. Given the discontinued nature of both the console and the franchise, mass market appeal is unlikely. However, the controller presents a compelling option for retro gamers. Original Guitar Hero and Rock Band peripherals often suffer wear and tear, potentially leading players to abandon the games due to broken controllers, especially as official replacements are no longer available. The Hyper Strummer provides a fresh, reliable option for nostalgic fans.

Recently, Guitar Hero has seen renewed interest. The Fortnite Festival's inclusion of a rhythm game mode similar to Rock Band and Guitar Hero has contributed to this. Additionally, the rise of "perfect playthrough" challenges, where players aim for flawless performances, further fuels demand for a high-quality, responsive controller. The Hyperkin Hyper Strummer offers just that.
