LEGO Unveils Van Gogh's Sunflowers with Hidden Surprise for Art Enthusiasts

Author : Anthony Apr 27,2025

The first thing you should know about the LEGO Art Vincent van Gogh – Sunflowers set is its impressive size. Measuring 21 inches high and 16 inches wide, it's approximately 60% the size of the original painting. This makes it not only a striking piece but also a bit unwieldy to handle when moving it around.

It transcends mere toy status, demanding to be displayed as art within your living space. This reflects LEGO's ongoing transformation from a curiosity for adults to a respected hobby.

LEGO Art Vincent van Gogh – Sunflowers

93 ImagesVincent van Gogh painted his iconic Sunflowers series during his time in Arles, France, a period marked by prolific creativity. He felt a deep emotional connection to the sunflower, viewing it as a symbol of gratitude and an artistic muse. As he wrote in a letter to a friend:

"If [Georges] Jeannin has the peony, [Ernest] Quost the hollyhock, I indeed, before others, have taken the sunflower."

In August 1888, van Gogh completed four versions of sunflowers in a vase. He revisited this theme in January 1889, creating repetitions of the third and fourth versions.

Of these seven paintings, the fourth version and its two repetitions stand out as the most celebrated. The original fourth version (F454) is housed at the National Gallery in London, England. One repetition (F457) can be found at the Sompo Museum of Art in Tokyo, Japan, while the other repetition (F458), known for its vibrant color composition, is displayed at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, Netherlands.

Established in 1973, the Van Gogh Museum collaborated with LEGO to produce the LEGO Vincent van Gogh - Sunflowers set, paying homage to the F458 repetition. This set is crafted as a three-dimensional relief, utilizing abstract pieces to mimic van Gogh's distinctive thick brushstrokes.

Upon opening the box, you'll find 34 numbered bags along with a printed instruction booklet that includes a QR code. Scanning this code directs you to a podcast exploring van Gogh's life and the inspirations behind his work.

I found the build's practicality to be particularly noteworthy. You start by constructing the frame, which I leaned against the wall after completion. Then, you assemble the canvas with the painting on top of it.

To finish the build, you mount the canvas into the frame and secure it with pins, adding a personal touch that mirrors the real-life process of staging and presentation. This enhances the set's perceived value and importance.

There's a delightful Easter egg hidden in the canvas's construction. Art experts discovered that van Gogh extended the canvas's height with a wooden strip during the painting process, ensuring the sunflowers had enough room. LEGO playfully replicates this detail by having you build the canvas initially as a single piece, then attach a separate strip at the top with pins. This detail, subtly highlighted in the photo below with a red circle, uses brown bricks to mimic wood.

This seemingly minor detail adds a layer of authenticity and exclusivity, known only to the builder, reflecting the trials and errors even a master like van Gogh experienced. It's a private joy that the LEGO builder can choose to share or keep secret.

Building the full-bloom sunflowers can be a bit tedious, yet it's unavoidable for achieving such a realistic look. The repetition mirrors van Gogh's own meticulous approach. Take breaks and enjoy the process; this isn't a set to rush through but to savor.

I particularly appreciated the wilting flowers and those viewed in profile. Initially abstract and random up close, they come together beautifully when viewed from a distance, revealing stems and leaves in context.

The most common question I get from other adults is, "Where do you put a LEGO set after you build it?" For this set, the answer is clear: it's perfect for your dining room wall. This set is designed with a specific purpose in mind, allowing you to anticipate its placement and enjoy it long after completion. A week after finishing mine, I'm still discovering new three-dimensional details that catch my eye. This LEGO Art Vincent van Gogh - Sunflowers set is the first must-have LEGO set of 2025, and I highly recommend it.

LEGO Vincent van Gogh - Sunflowers, Set #31215, is priced at $199.99 and includes 2615 pieces. It is available exclusively at the LEGO Store.
