Hulu may be bringing back Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Variety reports a reboot is in the works, with Sarah Michelle Gellar potentially returning as Buffy, albeit in a recurring role. The series will focus on a new Slayer.
Adding to the excitement, Academy Award winner Chloé Zhao (Nomadland, Eternals) is reportedly in negotiations to direct and executive produce. Nora and Lila Zuckerman are attached to write and serve as showrunners. Notably, original creator Joss Whedon is not involved.
Whedon's absence follows previous allegations of creating a toxic work environment on the original Buffy and its spin-off, Angel.
Plot details remain scarce, but the new series will center around a new Slayer, with the possibility of Gellar's return.
The original Buffy the Vampire Slayer, which ran for seven seasons (1997-2003), followed Buffy Summers, a high school student chosen to fight supernatural forces. Her allies included Willow Rosenberg, Xander Harris, and Watcher Rupert Giles. The series continued through canonical comic books following a spin-off series, Angel.
