Captain America: Brave New World is performing well globally, nearing $300 million at the box office. However, a significant 68% drop in domestic revenue during its second weekend raises concerns about its profitability.
Deadline reports a $180 million production budget and a break-even point of approximately $425 million. While the film exceeded expectations with a $100 million domestic opening weekend, its second weekend gross of $28.2 million mirrors the steep decline seen in 2023's Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, which ultimately failed to recoup its costs.
After two weekends, the film has grossed an estimated $289.4 million globally ($141.2 million domestically and $148.2 million internationally), adding $63.5 million worldwide in its second weekend (according to Comscore). Despite being the biggest theatrical release of 2025 so far, the substantial second-weekend drop is unexpected, particularly given the lack of competing blockbusters. Comscore senior analyst Paul Dergarabedian notes to Variety that this significant drop reflects less audience enthusiasm than typically seen with Marvel films. Deadline projects a final global box office gross of around $450 million.
The film's release coincided with mixed critical reception; IGN's review gave it a 5/10, criticizing its lack of innovation and underwhelming plot despite strong performances from the cast.
Marvel Studios and Disney will need Captain America: Brave New World to maintain strong performance to reverse the recent trend of underperforming MCU films (excluding last year's successful Deadpool & Wolverine). The success of this film will be crucial in building momentum for upcoming releases like Thunderbolts in May and The Fantastic Four: First Steps in July.
