PlayStation Productions at CES 2025: A Wave of Game Adaptations
At CES 2025, PlayStation Productions made a splash, announcing several new game adaptations slated for release in 2025 and beyond. The announcements, made on January 7th, included anime, movies, and a new season of a popular TV series.
New Adaptations Unveiled:
Among the highlights was the reveal of Ghost of Tsushima: Legends, a new anime series. This Crunchyroll and Aniplex collaboration, directed by Takanobu Mizumo with story composition by Gen Urobuchi, will premiere exclusively on Crunchyroll in 2027. Sony Music will provide the soundtrack.
Asad Qizilbash (Head of PlayStation Productions) and Ashley Brucks (President of Screen Gems) also announced upcoming films based on Horizon Zero Dawn (produced by Sony Pictures) and Helldivers 2 (produced by Columbia Pictures). Details on these projects remain scarce. They further revealed that the Until Dawn film adaptation is set for release on April 25, 2025.
Finally, Neil Druckmann unveiled a new trailer for The Last of Us season two, expanding on the The Last of Us Part II storyline and introducing characters like Abby and Dina.
Past Successes and Future Projects:
PlayStation Productions’ history of video game adaptations is a mix of successes and less-than-stellar results. While early adaptations like Resident Evil (2002) and Silent Hill (2006) were commercially successful, they faced criticism from fans. However, more recent ventures like Uncharted (2022) and Gran Turismo (2023) achieved both critical acclaim and box office success. The Twisted Metal series (Peacock, 2023) also saw a second season completed in late 2024, though its release date is yet to be announced.
Beyond the CES announcements, PlayStation Productions is also developing film adaptations of Days Gone and a sequel to Uncharted, along with a God of War TV series.
The continued success of PlayStation Productions suggests that more popular game franchises will likely be adapted into film and television in the future, driven by audience demand and the proven profitability of these ventures.
