Team Cherry's Marketing and PR Manager, Matthew Griffin, confirms that Hollow Knight: Silksong is still under active development and will eventually be released. This follows recent speculation sparked by a cake-related profile picture change by a co-creator. While that proved to be unrelated to any announcement, Griffin's statement provides much-needed reassurance for fans.
Official Confirmation from Team Cherry
Following a flurry of fan speculation, fueled by a seemingly innocuous profile picture change, Griffin took to X (formerly Twitter) to directly address fan concerns. A YouTuber, fireb0rn, initially investigated the cake-related incident, concluding it was not a precursor to a game announcement or ARG. However, Griffin's subsequent statement definitively confirmed that Silksong remains a real project, is progressing, and is slated for release. This marks the first significant update from the development team in over a year and a half.
A Long-Awaited Sequel
Initially unveiled in February 2019 with a projected release in the first half of 2023, Silksong faced a delay announced in May 2023. Team Cherry cited the game's expanded scope and their commitment to quality as reasons for the postponement. The game promises a new kingdom, nearly 150 new enemies, and a challenging new difficulty mode, "Silk Soul." The recent update, though brief, ends a period of silence that has lasted nearly two years since the delay announcement.
Fan reaction has been mixed. While some express relief and offer encouragement to the developers, others express impatience after nearly six years of anticipation, viewing the confirmation as insufficient.
Hollow Knight: Silksong is planned for release on PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox One. The game will follow Hornet, the princess-protector of Hallownest, on a perilous journey to the kingdom's peak. A specific release date remains unannounced.
