FromSoftware has unveiled more details about their upcoming Switch 2 exclusive, The Duskbloods, highlighting how their collaboration with Nintendo has influenced both the game's style and the design of its hub area's keeper. The game's trailer, showcased during the Switch 2 Direct, ended with a captivating glimpse of a winged rat character adorned with glowing glyphs, sparking curiosity among fans.
This winged rat, as it turns out, serves as the hub companion in The Duskbloods, akin to the fire keepers from the Dark Souls series. According to director Hidetaka Miyazaki in an interview with Nintendo, "That character shares a similar role with the fire keepers from the Dark Souls series. They remain in the hub area, providing the player with advice and guidance." Miyazaki further explained the inspiration behind the character, stating, "I suppose you could say we tried doing something a little Nintendo-esque in the spirit of the partnership."
When pressed on what he meant by "Nintendo-esque," Miyazaki elaborated, "We tried something cute for a change. Although I will say this character is actually an elderly gentleman (laughter)." This marks a departure from FromSoftware's traditional shrine keepers, such as Melina, the Maiden in Black, and the Doll, who have been pivotal in guiding players through their challenging worlds.
Given The Duskbloods is a PvPvE game, the nature of the winged rat's guidance remains a mystery. Miyazaki teased that FromSoft is introducing "a lot of new and interesting ideas," promising an unexpected experience when the game launches on Nintendo Switch 2 in 2026.
