Tencent, the Chinese tech giant, has reportedly secured a majority stake in Kuro Games, the studio behind the popular titles Wuthering Waves and Punishing: Gray Raven. This acquisition gives Tencent control of over 51% of Kuro Games' shares, making it the sole external shareholder.
This significant investment builds upon Tencent's initial investment in Kuro Games last year. While Tencent now holds a controlling interest, Kuro Games assures continued operational independence, mirroring Tencent's approach with Riot Games (League of Legends, Valorant) and Supercell (Clash of Clans, Brawl Stars). The official statement from Kuro Games emphasizes that this shift will foster a "more stable external environment" and bolster its long-term independence strategy. Tencent has yet to publicly confirm the acquisition.
Kuro Games has achieved notable success with both Punishing: Gray Raven and Wuthering Waves, each generating over $120 million USD in revenue and receiving ongoing updates. The latter game's recognition is further highlighted by its Players' Voice nomination at The Game Awards. This partnership with Tencent is expected to significantly impact the future development and global reach of Kuro Games' titles.
