Free-to-Play Shooter Spectre Divide Shutting Down Weeks After Console Launch

Author : Gabriella Mar 16,2025

The free-to-play 3v3 shooter, Spectre Divide, is shutting down just six months after its September 2024 launch, and weeks after its arrival on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Its developer, Mountaintop Studios, is also closing its doors.

Mountaintop CEO Nate Mitchell confirmed the news in a social media statement. He explained that the Season 1 launch didn't achieve the necessary success to sustain the game and the studio. While the game initially attracted around 400,000 players in its first week, with a peak concurrent player count of approximately 10,000 across all platforms, sustained player numbers and revenue weren't sufficient to cover operating costs. Despite exploring options like finding a publisher, securing additional investment, or seeking acquisition, Mountaintop was unable to secure the necessary funding. Mitchell acknowledged the challenging current state of the gaming industry.

The statement continued that, despite stretching their remaining capital, they ultimately ran out of funding to support the game. Spectre Divide will be taken offline within the next 30 days, with refunds issued for all player spending since the Season 1 launch.

This announcement contradicts October 2024 reports stating Spectre Divide was secure. At that time, Mitchell stated Mountaintop had sufficient funds to support the game long-term.

PlayIGN's August 2024 preview praised *Spectre Divide*'s tactical 3v3 gameplay and innovative Duality system, which allowed players to control two characters simultaneously. However, the game's swift closure follows a string of failed live-service titles, including Rocksteady's *Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League* and Sony's *Concord*.
