A new report sheds light on a first-party PlayStation game code-named Gummy Bears, which is said to be inspired by the Super Smash Bros. series. The game was first mentioned online in August 2023 by The Game Post, which reported that Bungie was developing a MOBA under this codename. However, following a significant layoff of 220 employees at Bungie—a 17% reduction in its workforce—and the integration of 155 staffers into Sony Interactive Entertainment, the development of Gummy Bears has reportedly been handed over to a newly established PlayStation studio.
According to The Game Post, citing unnamed sources, Sony has created a new subsidiary with around 40 employees that is now working on Gummy Bears. While the game is still likely years away from release, its current development stage remains undisclosed. One of the standout features of Gummy Bears is its health system, which mirrors that of Super Smash Bros. by using a percentage-based damage system instead of traditional health bars. In this system, the higher the damage percentage, the further characters are knocked back upon being hit, and they can even be knocked off the map at high percentages.
Gummy Bears is said to include three character classes typical of MOBAs: Attack, Defense, and Support. The game will offer multiple game modes and feature an aesthetic described as cozy, vibrant, and "lo-fi." This design approach is a departure from Bungie's previous work and is intended to target a younger demographic.
The project, which has been in development since at least 2022, aligns with recent reports of PlayStation establishing a new studio in Los Angeles, which is believed to be the same one working on Gummy Bears.
