The developer and publisher of Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 have firmly stated that they are not aiming to transform the game into a "full live service" model following community backlash against events perceived as promoting "FOMO," or the fear of missing out. FOMO is a strategy commonly employed by live service game developers to spur quick engagement and expenditure on time-limited virtual items, implying that players might miss out forever if they don't act promptly.
This approach has drawn criticism for fostering an unhealthy dynamic between video games and their communities. In 2021, research commissioned by the UK's GambleAware charity highlighted that many games utilize psychological tactics, like FOMO, to encourage purchases of loot boxes. Although Space Marine 2 does not include loot boxes, its introduction of community events aimed at unlocking exclusive cosmetics sparked a similar backlash, with some labeling the game as a "live service" title.
In response to the criticism, Space Marine 2's publisher, Focus Entertainment, and developer, Saber Interactive, acknowledged the negative reception to these community events. They emphasized in a statement that they have no intention of turning Space Marine 2 into a full live service game. They clarified that items available during these events will be accessible to all players at a later date, with the events merely offering dedicated players an opportunity to unlock them earlier. The statement also addressed the need for a smoother unlocking process, apologizing for any inconvenience and promising improvements to make the experience less stressful.
As a gesture of goodwill, Focus Entertainment is offering the coveted emblem-less Mk VIII Errant Helmet for free to all players who link their PROS account to Space Marine 2. This helmet was part of the Imperial Vigil community event, previously only obtainable by achieving a victory with each of the six classes in Operations Mode before the event's conclusion on March 3.
Players are currently anticipating the 7.0 update for Space Marine 2, which will introduce a new weapon, a new Operations map, and PvE Prestige Ranks. Last month, Focus and Saber addressed the community's growing frustration over a lack of content and outlined upcoming additions to the game.
Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 achieved a record-breaking launch, selling 5 million copies and becoming the fastest-selling Warhammer video game ever.
