After Inc., the $2 Plague Inc. Sequel: A Risky, But Potentially Rewarding Venture
Navigating a Saturated Mobile Market
Ndemic Creations' recent release of After Inc. on November 28th, 2024, at a price point of $2, represents a bold strategy in a mobile gaming landscape dominated by free-to-play (F2P) models. Developer James Vaughn, in an interview with Game File, openly acknowledged the risk. The game, a sequel to the immensely popular Plague Inc., presents a more optimistic scenario, focusing on rebuilding human civilization after the Necroa Virus pandemic.
Despite the seemingly brighter premise, Vaughn expressed reservations about the $2 price tag, citing the market saturation of F2P games laden with microtransactions. However, the team's confidence stems from the established success of Plague Inc. and Rebel Inc., believing these titles will drive player discovery and demonstrate continued demand for sophisticated strategy games on mobile platforms. Vaughn stated, "The only reason we can even consider releasing a premium game is because we have our existing juggernauts...which will help players find our games - and also show that there is still an appetite for intelligent, sophisticated strategy games on mobile."
Ndemic Creations has committed to a transparent pricing model, promising no additional costs for purchased content. The App Store listing explicitly states the absence of "consumable microtransactions" and assures players that "Expansion Packs are buy once, play forever."
Initial success suggests the strategy may be paying off. After Inc. currently holds a top 5 position in the App Store's Top Paid Games category, trailing only Plague Inc. and Stardew Valley, and boasts a 4.77/5 rating on Google Play. A Steam early access version, titled After Inc. Revival, is slated for release in 2025.
Rebuilding Civilization in a Post-Apocalyptic World
After Inc. is a 4X grand strategy game blended with simulation elements. Players take on the challenge of rebuilding human society in a post-Plague Inc. United Kingdom, navigating a lush, yet challenging, post-apocalyptic landscape. Utilizing resources salvaged from ruins, players establish settlements, construct essential buildings (farms, lumberyards, etc.), and manage vital services to maintain a happy and well-fed population. Players can choose from five leaders (ten on Steam), each with unique abilities.
The looming threat of roaming zombies adds a layer of strategic complexity, demanding careful resource management and tactical planning for safe resource gathering and expansion. Vaughn's confident assertion, "Nothing that can’t be solved with some nails stuck in a cricket bat!" encapsulates the game's blend of challenge and rewarding gameplay.
