EA's Apex Legends: A Sixth Birthday and a 2.0 Reboot?

As Apex Legends approaches its sixth anniversary, EA acknowledges its underperformance despite a massive player base. While boasting over 200 million players, the game's revenue isn't meeting EA's expectations. CEO Andrew Wilson confirmed this in a recent financial call, stating that Apex Legends' net bookings have fallen year-on-year, although meeting internal projections.

Wilson highlighted the game's continued community support, focusing on quality-of-life improvements, anti-cheat measures, and new content creation. While acknowledging some progress, he admitted it hasn't been sufficient.

The solution? EA is developing "Apex Legends 2.0," a significant update aiming to revitalize the franchise, attract new players, and boost profitability. However, strategic timing is key. The release is planned for after the launch of the next Battlefield game (anticipated before April 2026), likely sometime in EA's 2027 fiscal year.

Wilson emphasized EA's long-term commitment to Apex Legends, envisioning a franchise lifespan comparable to its other successful titles. He described Apex 2.0 not as the final iteration, but a major step in the game's evolution. This mirrors Activision's approach with Call of Duty: Warzone 2.0, though the success of that reboot remains debatable.

Despite its current trajectory toward record-low concurrent player counts on Steam, Apex Legends remains a top-performing battle royale title. EA will undoubtedly be studying the successes and failures of competitors in the genre as it strives to reignite Apex Legends' growth.
