Life is Strange: Double Exposure's Underwhelming Reception Prompts Square Enix Feedback Survey
Following the less-than-stellar reception of Life is Strange: Double Exposure, publisher Square Enix has launched a survey to gather player feedback. The aim is to understand the game's shortcomings and inform the development of future Life is Strange titles.
The October 2024 release of Life is Strange: Double Exposure, a continuation of Max Caulfield's story, initially held promise. However, the game's return of a beloved protagonist didn't translate into critical or commercial success. Metascore ratings (PS5: 73 critic, 4.2 user) reflect the lukewarm response, often attributed to controversial narrative choices.
Further compounding the situation, developer Deck Nine Studios announced layoffs in December 2024. In response, Square Enix distributed a 15-minute questionnaire to Life is Strange fans, seeking input on various aspects of Double Exposure, including narrative, gameplay, technical performance, and overall value. The survey also gauges players' interest in future installments.
Square Enix Seeks to Understand Double Exposure's Failure
The survey's results are crucial for Square Enix, as the reception to Double Exposure fell significantly short of expectations. This contrasts sharply with the positive response to Deck Nine's previous installment, Life is Strange: True Colors, which was lauded for its narrative and emotional resonance. Alex Chen, the protagonist of True Colors, also resonated more strongly with players than Double Exposure's characters.
While Double Exposure hinted at potential storylines for future games, the feedback gathered by Square Enix will likely significantly shape the direction of the series. The extent to which future games will incorporate fan feedback remains to be seen, but it's clear the publisher is actively seeking to course-correct.
