Console War: Is It Finally Over?

Author : Riley Apr 08,2025

The age-old debate between PlayStation and Xbox has been a staple of the video game world for decades. Whether you've engaged in heated discussions with friends, started a Reddit thread, or created a TikTok video on the topic, you've likely been part of this conversation. While some gamers swear by PC gaming or are devoted to Nintendo, the rivalry between Sony and Microsoft has shaped much of the video game industry's recent history. However, with the rapid evolution of the gaming landscape, including the rise of handheld gaming and the tech-savvy younger generations, the traditional 'console war' has transformed. Has a clear winner emerged? The answer might surprise you.

The video game industry has grown into a financial powerhouse, with global revenue reaching $285 billion in 2019 and soaring to $475 billion in 2023. This figure surpasses the combined earnings of the global movie and music industries, which totaled $308 billion and $28.6 billion respectively in 2023. The industry is projected to hit nearly $700 billion by 2029, a testament to its explosive growth from its humble beginnings with games like Pong.

This lucrative market has attracted Hollywood stars like Mads Mikkelsen, Keanu Reeves, Jon Bernthal, and Willem Dafoe, who have all featured in video games over the past five years. Their participation underscores the shifting perception of video games as a mainstream entertainment medium. Even giants like Disney are making significant moves into gaming, with a $1.5 billion investment in Epic Games during Bob Iger's second term, aiming to establish a strong gaming presence. However, not all companies are riding this wave of success, particularly Microsoft's Xbox division.

Xbox Series X and S consoles

The Xbox Series X and S were designed to be a significant upgrade over the Xbox One, yet they have struggled to capture the market. The Xbox One outsells the Series X/S by nearly double, and according to Mat Piscatella from Circana, the current console generation may have already peaked in sales. In 2024, the Xbox Series X/S sold fewer than 2.5 million units, while the PlayStation 5 sold the same number in just the first quarter. Rumors of Xbox potentially closing its physical game distribution department and pulling out of the EMEA region further suggest a retreat from the console market.

Microsoft has seemingly acknowledged defeat in the console war. During the Activision-Blizzard acquisition, Microsoft admitted that it never believed it could win the console war. With the Xbox Series X/S struggling to match the sales of its predecessor and Microsoft's focus shifting, the company is moving away from traditional console manufacturing. Xbox Game Pass has become a central focus, with Microsoft willing to pay substantial sums to include major titles like Grand Theft Auto 5 and Star Wars Jedi: Survivor on the service. The 'This Is An Xbox' campaign reflects Microsoft's new vision of Xbox as a service rather than just a console.

Microsoft's strategy now includes exploring new hardware options, such as a rumored Xbox handheld, and expanding into mobile gaming. Phil Spencer has acknowledged the dominance of mobile gaming, and Microsoft is planning to launch a mobile game store to compete with Apple and Google. This shift aligns with the broader market trend, where mobile gaming has become the dominant force, with over 1.93 billion of the 3.3 billion gamers worldwide playing on mobile devices in 2024. Mobile games accounted for $92.5 billion of the industry's $184.3 billion total market valuation, while console gaming contributed $50.3 billion.

Mobile gaming statistics

The rise of mobile gaming isn't a new phenomenon. By 2013, mobile gaming in Asia was already far ahead of the West, with South Korea and China leading the charge. Games like Puzzle & Dragon and Candy Crush Saga out-earned GTA 5 in 2013, and throughout the 2010s, mobile titles like Crossfire, Monster Strike, Honor of Kings, Puzzle & Dragon, and Clash of Clans were among the highest-grossing games globally.

While mobile gaming has taken the lead, PC gaming has also seen significant growth, with an increase of 59 million new players each year since 2014, reaching 1.86 billion in 2024. Despite this growth, the PC gaming market's share remains behind consoles, with a $9 billion gap in 2024. This trend suggests that while PC gaming is on the rise, it's not yet poised to overtake consoles.

PC gaming growth

On the other side of the console war, Sony's PlayStation 5 has been a resounding success, with 65 million units sold to date, far outpacing the 29.7 million units sold for the Xbox Series X/S. Sony's Game and Network Services reported a 12.3% profit increase, driven by strong sales of first-party titles like Astro Bot and Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut. Projections suggest that by 2029, Sony could sell 106.9 million PS5s, while Microsoft expects to sell between 56-59 million Xbox Series X/S units by 2027. However, the PS5's success is tempered by the fact that half of PlayStation users still play on PS4s, and there are only about 15 true PS5-exclusive games, which may not justify the console's $500 price tag for many.

The $700 PS5 Pro received a lukewarm reception, with many feeling the upgrade came too early in the console's lifecycle. The lack of compelling new titles to showcase the PS5 Pro's capabilities has led to skepticism about its value. However, the upcoming release of Grand Theft Auto 6 could change this narrative, potentially becoming the defining game of this generation and showcasing the PS5's true potential.

So, who won the console war? For Microsoft, it seems there was never a belief in winning against Sony. For Sony, the PS5 has been successful but hasn't yet proven to be a significant leap forward. The real winners appear to be those who have opted out of the traditional console war altogether. Mobile gaming companies are increasingly encroaching on the console market, with Tencent rumored to be in talks to acquire Ubisoft and having already purchased Sumo Group. Mobile gaming's importance to the industry's sustainability and profitability is undeniable, with companies like Take-Two Interactive reporting that 10% of the world's population plays its subsidiary Zynga's games monthly. The future of gaming will likely be defined more by cloud gaming and mobile platforms than by traditional console hardware. The console war may be over, but the mobile gaming war is just beginning.
