The sheer variety of suits and helmets made animating such violence realistically, without introducing glitches or unrealistic visuals, incredibly difficult. Given Starfield's persistent technical issues, even after several major updates, this decision appears justifiable.

Starfield's Reduced Gore: A Technical and Thematic Choice

Technical hurdles weren't the sole reason for the reduced gore. Mejillones also noted that Fallout's stylized gore contributes to its humorous tone, a contrast to Starfield's more serious atmosphere. While Starfield includes references to Bethesda's more violent titles—a recent addition of Doom-inspired content serves as an example—it maintains a generally more grounded and realistic sci-fi setting. Over-the-top executions, while potentially appealing to some players, might have disrupted the game's immersive quality.

Despite this, some fans continue to advocate for increased realism. Concerns have been raised about the perceived lack of authenticity in aspects like Starfield's nightclubs, compared to titles like Cyberpunk 2077 and Mass Effect. Adding tongue-in-cheek violence could have further exacerbated these concerns, potentially making the game feel less grounded. Ultimately, Bethesda's decision to reduce the game's gore, despite deviating from the studio's previous shooter trends, seems to have been a calculated one.
